In a seismic development that has reverberated across the international stage, a United Nations commission has officially concluded that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Released on September 16, 2025, the report from the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory marks the most authoritative UN finding to date on the ongoing crisis.

Chaired by renowned South African jurist Navi Pillay, the panel's 72-page document accuses Israeli authorities and security forces of carrying out four of the five genocidal acts outlined in the 1948 Genocide Convention.

This declaration comes nearly two years after Hamas's October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and led to the abduction of over 250 hostages, sparking Israel's massive military response.

The war in Gaza has been catastrophic. Palestinian health authorities report nearly 65,000 deaths, including thousands of children, and over 160,000 injuries since the conflict escalated. More than 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced, often multiple times, amid widespread destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and infrastructure.

A UN-backed panel declared famine in parts of Gaza in August 2025, with over half a million people facing acute food insecurity due to Israel's blockade on aid. The report details how Israeli forces have imposed a "total siege," blocking essentials like food, water, fuel, and medicine, leading to starvation as a weapon of war.
