In a fiery Sunday morning post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump unveiled what he’s calling a “tariff dividend”—a promise to distribute at least $2,000 checks to every American, excluding high-income earners, funded directly from the trillions in revenue generated by his administration’s sweeping tariffs on imports from China, Canada, Mexico, the EU, and beyond.

“People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are Highest EVER,” Trump proclaimed, before adding, “A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.” He followed up by asserting that any surplus revenue would “SUBSTANTIALLY PAY DOWN NATIONAL DEBT,” framing the move as a win for both working families and fiscal responsibility.

This isn’t the first whisper of such a plan. Trump floated the idea as early as August, suggesting rebates in the $1,000–$2,000 range to reward Americans for the “wealth” tariffs are repatriating. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) even introduced the American Worker Rebate Act in July, proposing $600 checks to tariff revenue beneficiaries, including dependents—a nod to the policy’s populist roots.
